Try a Legal Aid firm. There ought to be at least a couple in L.A.
Check the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Community and Legal Services page for assistance in finding a lawyer, including links to low- or no-cost legal services:
You DON’T need an attorney. Click on the link below. They will have everything you need. Employment Discrimination is a FEDERAL issue that IS NOT regulated by state.
With due respect to the person who told you this is a federal issue, that’s incorrect. State and federal laws protect you.
LACBA is a good resource, provided by one of the other respondents.
You should know that most attorneys who handle plaintiff’s employment and/or civil rights claims will work on a contingency basis, meaning they only make money if you receive an award or settlement. You do not have to pay any money out of pocket, but rather would agree that your attorney gets somewhere between 25 and 40 percent of whatever you win. If you have talked to attorneys who will require you to pay by the hour, they either are not experienced in this field, or in their judgment you do not have a good claim, and so they do not want to take on the risk of representing you on a contingency basis.
FYI, depending on the nature of your claim, you may have to file a complaint with either the federal EEOC or the state Department of Labor before you can sue in court. There are time limits placed on how long you have to file your complaint with the state or federal goverment. If a significant amount of time has already passed following the events at issue, I recommend that you call the help lines for those two departments and get information about filing complaints on your own, without an attorney, to preserve your rights while you find a lawyer.
Good luck!
