How does one know the difference between a good attorney and the other kind?

I have used attorneys over the years but have never really been impressed with their performance. Referrals and yellow pages don’t seem to be the answer. How can an average person weed out the gold diggers and shysters and find an attorney that will actually do a good job for their client?

Check the bar association for complaints for staters; and many state list some rankings on the Bar assoication homepages
One of the best ways is to ask your friends and relatives. Depending on the type attorney you need, find someone who’s been in a similar situation and ask who they used as their attorney. You may also check with your state bar association about a particular attorney. Once you find someone you’re happy with, you’ll know where to turn next time. My extended family has been using the same attorney for civil matters (real estate transactions, divorce, wills, etc.) for over 25 years.
I may be wrong but I have found that the more you pay, the better your chances…..still no guarantee of winning but it seems to be the trend in courts across the land.
