The first thing to do is to call a patent attorney. They can set up the application and the paperwork for you. But, before taking that step, they can search the US Patent office to see if anyone else has already applied for a patent on your idea or a similar one. This should cast around $400.00 for this search. It is a wise thing to do becasue to apply for a patent it costs about $4 – 5,000.00. If someone beat you to the punch, you want to know before you spend that kind of money. I found that someone had already patented the idea I had with 18 world wide patents. It wasn’t a total lost though because I contacted the company and was able to buy stock before the company goes public. It should proove to be a very good investment.

Definately talk to the attorney (that is free) and have them do the search (that is worth the money). Good luck!

The prior answer is partially correct.
The PTO will tell you what the application fees are, maybe a few grand, not much at all really. That’s the LEAST of your expenses.
Depending upon what your invention is, the costs for prosecuting your patent can run into the millions. I did IP law for a decade, even relatively modest inventions can run into $200,000-$500,000 very easily. 100% of patents are initially rejected, you will need to retain experts to convince the examiner of the novelty of your idea.
Do as much as you can on your own. The USPTO website is a gold mine, you can find inventions similar to yours and estimate your chances for success.
